PRAISING GOD IN THE
HEIGHTS
SERVING GOD IN THE WORLD
Christian education
Christian education is a vital part of the life of Westover Hills. In order to better understand God's will for the world and to discover ways that we might respond to God's call, Westover Hills
Presbyterian Church employs a full-time Director of Christian Education who
teaches, directs, supervises, plans the curriculem and selects teaching
materials with the assistance of the CE committee and the Session. We offer a variety of educational opportunities, including Bible study and special programs.
Sunday school classes for all ages from preschool
through adult meet from 9:30 - 10:15 every Sunday morning.
Sunday School Classes for
Adults:
there are three (3) adult class offerings at Westover Hills.
The Lectionary Class, is lead by Co-Pastors, Debbie and Jim
Freeman, who conduct the class on alternate Sundays and lead the class
in an examination and discussion of the
text on which next week's sermon will be based. Participants simultaneously study the bible and prepare themselves to
listen to next week's sermon with greater understanding. This class will
meet in our new education building in one of the classrooms off the Matthew
hallway.
The Richard B. Hardie Class studies the bible and The third class, titled
“The Thoughtful Christian,” is a
discussion based class led by church members. If you would
like to see sample topics that will be discussed you can visit
www.thethoughtfulchristian.com.
Programming For
Children: WHPC provides a Sunday school class for preschool and
Kindergarten children, two classes for children in grades one through six, and
two classes for youth in
grades seven through twelve.
Preschool and kindergarten children study stories from the Bible which
are enhanced by crafts, music and dramatic presentations by loving and caring
church members. Teachers of children in grades 1-6 use a rotation model to
provide fuller comprehension. During a six-week period, technology,
dramatics, crafts, music, videos and literature provide enjoyment and real
meaning to children of all ages.
Children’s Classes:
Each Sunday morning children from preschool age to fifth grade meet in the
Westover Hills Theater beginning at 9:15 a.m. They enjoy time together to sing
and talk about theme stories. At 9:30 the children travel to their classrooms
with their teachers. The following classes will be offered: Noah – children age
3 through those entering kindergarten , Samuel – children in grades 1 and 2,
Joshua – children in grades 3-5.
Classes for Youth:
This fall we will be expanding our programs for youth in grades 6-12. We will
have two classes on Sunday mornings, one for grades 6-8 and one for grades 9-12. The DCE
over-sees the youth classes, which focus on
relating teachings in the Bible to the world in which students are growing up. .
Vacation Bible School:
Inter-generational vacation Bible School is offered
during the summer for children and adults. activities include
drama, crafts, music and teaching, and are designed to promote fun and
mission.
D.R.A.M.A. Drama,
Recreation, Art, Music, After-school:
The
2006-2007 D.R.A.M.A. program begins September 19. This fall will be the fifth
year of the DRAMA afterschool program at Westover Hills. We are excited about
continuing this important ministry in our community. The DRAMA program is open
to children in kindergarten through fifth grade regardless of church affiliation
and meets Tuesday afternoons from 2:45 to 5:15 p.m.
DRAMA is a very special program that has enjoyed the support of the Westover
Hills family since day one. As a result of that support our program grew to
include 38 students last spring, with not quite half being church members. We
are once again asking for your support and your help as we kick off the DRAMA
program. The DRAMA program is free to any child who wishes to participate
regardless of their church membership. This has allowed us to reach out to our
community and open our doors to our neighbors. It also means that we rely on
volunteer support through the year. We need adults who can provide supervision
and care two and a half hours a week. We don’t expect everyone to volunteer
every week, but could you help one Tuesday a month? Try it once and see how
wonderful it is to work with these children. Try it twice and you might be
hooked. Please prayerfully consider volunteering in our DRAMA program. If you
have questions, contact the church office 663-6383
