Christian Education

Westover Hills
offers Christian Education opportunities for members and guests.  Sunday School is for all ages including infant and toddler care in the nursery from 9:45 am - 10:15 am every Sunday morning.  Classes for preschool and kindergarten(ages 3,4,5), and elementary (grades 1 -6) meet on the second floor of the education building.

Children’s News
As they celebrate God’s greatest gift, his Son, Children on Sunday Morning will begin to understand what it means to love Jesus, how we experience that love, and how we respond to it. Included will be two special Sundays in February, the 18th and the 25th, with Shirley and Gordon Garlington. The Garlingtons will lead the children in beginning to understand the meaning of holy communion. Continuing through Lent, the children will experience Bible stories of Jesus’ love. Then it will be Easter and we love Easter! All children, pre-K through 5th grades, are welcome on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15am in the Children’s Room.
Adult News
Adult Christian Education Opportunity for Lent
“The Ministry of the Whole Body of Christ”
We will soon enter the season of Lent (February 14 – March 29), a time to examine and assess how our discipleship is living up to the call of our baptism. To help guide us, our Sunday morning adult Christian Education time will follow the pattern of the promises elders and deacons make when they are ordained and installed by the congregation. Because ordained ministers differ from other baptized members in function only, the questions they consider in preparation for their ministry can benefit yours and my ministry, too.
All ministry is a gift from Jesus Christ. The ministry of Jesus Christ is the basis of all church ministries; our standard, as the Body of Christ, is the pattern of the One who came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45), and who taught “as one having authority” (Mark 1:22).
All Christians are called through their baptism to this ministry of servanthood, which we call discipleship, in the world. The focus of our discipleship is based on the needs of our location, our interests and gifts, yet is always rooted in the ways of Jesus Christ in spirit and outreach.
Here are the topics we’ll take up for the Sundays of Lent:
February 4 – The Call to Discipleship
February 11 – Trust in Jesus Christ
February 18 – The Authority of Scripture
February 25 – The Interpretation of Scripture and Freedom of Conscience
March 4 –     Ordering the Church
March 11 –    Friendship in Christ
March 18 –    Peace, Unity, and Purity
March 25 –    Energy, Intelligence, Imagination, and Love

The Second Wednesday Spirituality Discussion Group
The The Second Wednesday Spirituality Discussion Group meets in the parlor from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on -- you guessed it -- the secomd Wednesday of the month. The group is open to all who are interested in exploring and expanding their spiritual lives, and we invite both Westover Hills members and visitors to join us. Our discussions are very informal and cover  wide range of topics. We begin with a few minutes of quiet, then we draw a spiritually related question at random from ones that have been contributed by members of the group and use it as a springboard into the evening's conversation. No homework. No textbook. No outside reading. No special academic credentials. No secret handshake. Just your own spiritual experiences and ponderings. You don't even have to say a word if you don't want to. You can just show up and listen to what others have to say.
Here's a sampling of some of the questions we've explored over the years:
* Your religious life and your spiritual life. Are they the same thing?
* Enlightenment. What is it? How do you define it?
* In your own experience, what is the Holy Spirit?
* Discernment. How do you know when a coincidence is not a coincidence?
There are no "right" or "wrong" answers -- just a sharing of individual spiritual journeys and experiences. If you want to know more, you can contact H.K. Stewart, the moderator of the group, at 664-0500 or hks@hkstewart.com. We hope you'll mark your calendar and join us for an enriching experience.
