PRAISING GOD IN THE
HEIGHTS
SERVING GOD IN THE WORLD
Study Service and Fellowship
Westover Hillers experience no difficulty in combining work with pleasure. The various circles, study
groups and fellowship groups which function at Westover Hills foster a caring
atmosphere in which persons of all ages may experience the love of God through
their combined efforts in carrying out their mission of mutual support and
outreach to others. Through our participation in these groups we experience the
real joy of being Christians.
Presbyterian Women
One of the most active and
involved groups in the life of Westover Hills is the Presbyterian Women.
This group, organized for service as well as fellowship and study, has a
long-standing tradition of dedicated participation not only in this
congregation, but throughout the denomination as well.
At the heart of Presbyterian Women are the circles, groups of women that
meet each month for bible study and fellowship.
Our new year of circle meetings and study will begin in September. If
you are not already a member of a circle, we hope you will plan to join
one of the three WHPC circles for study, fun, and fellowship. The Sarahs
Meet the 2nd Monday at 12:00 noon at the church; The Ruths meet the 2nd
Monday at 7 p.m. in homes and
The Marys meet the 3rd Monday at
1:30 p.m. in homes.
One of the most active committees of Presbyterian Women does "hands
on" mission work for local and foreign missions on the first Monday of
each month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This group is open to all women
and welcomes anyone who can come to help. There are also several
projects on-going so that each woman can choose the one project that is
most interesting to her.
Through Presbyterian Women there is also the opportunity to join with
women from other area congregations, Presbyterian and others. A board,
made up of the officers of Presbyterian Women, meets once a month to
make decisions and plan the activities and programs for the coming year.
You are cordially invited to participate in the activities of
Presbyterian Women.
HYouth
That is the name of the youth program
here at Westover Hills. The group is made up of junior and senior high youth
which meets every Sunday evening from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Youth House. The
youth participate in worship, participate in Arkansas Presbytery or
denominational conferences and camps, and yearly mission trips. At least one
Sunday a year is designated as Youth Sunday where the youth provide the worship
leadership, and the youth lead the Sunrise Service on Easter morning in the
courtyard.
Service to
Others
In chapter 25 of the Gospel of Matthew Jesus teaches his followers about the
urgency of reaching out to meet the needs of the world, especially of those who
are less fortunate and those who are suffering. The Presbyterian Church (USA)
sees outreach and stewardship to be primary activities of a life lived in
Christ. Westover Hills offers many ways that individuals may follow Jesus' teaching to
minister to the needs of others, all of which begin with good stewardship.
Stewardship
Stewardship is about more than money. Stewardship is about what we do with what
we have, our talents, our time, our minds and bodies, as well as our other
resources. Members of Westover Hills are encouraged to be as actively involved
in the work of the church as they are able, and to reach beyond the work of this
congregation and into the world, seeking to serve Jesus Christ.
Among the groups and agencies supported by Westover Hills with regular financial
contributions are the Presbytery of Arkansas, the Synod of the Sun, the General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA),
LifeQuest of Arkansas, Stewpot, Presbyterian Urban Council, and Presbyterian
Village. Support of these groups and others is made possible by the stewardship
of Westover Hills' members.
Congregational
Outreach
Over time Westover Hills has developed ways of helping to meet the needs of
our community and our world through specific outreach programs. These include:
LifeQuest of Arkansas
LifeQuest, founded in 1981, is a
volunteer-operated non-profit for older adults; dedicated to enhancing life’s
journey through the middle and later years through life-long learning and
meaningful volunteerism. "Adventures in Learning" classes provide intellectual
and social stimulation for active adults of all ages, and eight Civic Services
are geared to helping adults 55+ remain independent and in their own homes.
In Addition, the congregation at Westover Hills regularly
provides support to The Vera Lloyd Children's Home, and Heifer Project
International.
Food and Clothing Collected: on a regular basis
members and friends of Westover Hills contribute food and clothing for
various area agencies. Among those agencies which receive such support
from the congregation are Dorcas House, Union Rescue Mission, Our House,
and St. Francis House. One recent special collection was a mitten tree
which was given to Watershed outreach for distribution.
Fellowship
Music Programs
Music has always been important to the life of our congregation. Whether
gathered in the Sanctuary, the Fellowship Hall, a Sunday School classroom, or on
retreat, music is always a part of the event.
The pipe organ in the Sanctuary, a tracker organ built by the Sipe Organ Co.,
is one of only three tracker organs in the state. While the organ has a Baroque
look and sound, music of all periods can be performed on the instrument and
music of every style and period can be heard in our worship services. The music
might range from Bach to gospel to high Victorian harmonies, with the only
constant being that our music is our gift to God.
The music groups in our church meet throughout the year. David Austin.
organist and choir director, directs the adult choir and hand bells. JANET
ROGERS,teaches music to children in DRAMA which meets each Tuesday afternoon.
The Sanctuary Choir, which sings each Sunday morning and
for many of the special worship services, rehearses each Wednesday at 6:30
p.m. Rehearsals are a positive, joyous experience. If you attend a
rehearsal, you'll hear singing, of course, but you'll probably hear as much
laughter as music. Monthly choir parties help create the closeness our Choir
members feel.
The Handbell Choir meets each Sunday at 5:00 p.m. to practice and
prepare for frequent performances.
Adult Fellowship Groups
Westover Hills is blessed with a
wide range of adult fellowship groups, one of which is suited for every
age adult.
The Mariners:
("Middle Age") meet about quarterly for fellowship and fun. Members host
pot-luck dinners in their homes such as the annual Holiday Hodge-podge
party, and a Christmas party.
The Beacons:
("Mature Adults") meet for fellowship, service, and various activities
throughout the year, often in members' homes. The Christmas party is an
annual high-light.
